The fingerprint reader is built into the iPhone 5S home button. It automatically unlocks the iPhone 5S on touch, and can be used to make purchases through the iPhone store.

Apple will allow multiple fingerprints to be stored on the phone and the handset can read a fingerprint from any angle.

Apple has built the button from sapphire crystal to protect the sensor. It’s activated by the metal ring around the home button.

This does however spell the end for the iconic iPhone home screen square, which every handset to date has featured.

Apple stores users’ fingerprint details on the A7 chip. It is never backed up to iCloud, Apple servers or anywhere else on the phone, helping to keep users’ personal information secure.

The iPhone 5S will be released on September 20, with pre-orders taken from Friday (September 13).
